1899. Bergum, Friesland. Willem Klaas Wits, then aged 52, set up a painting business, little realising that his name would still be remembered two centuries later. He carried out painting jobs of all sizes in and around the village.
Under the second generation of the Wits family, the company expanded its operations: branches were opened in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Groningen and Zwolle. The painting business is expanded to include ship preservation and other maintenance work. There is scarcely any time to mark the 50th anniversary in 1949, such is the pressure on Wits with the reconstruction of the Netherlands. The orders were pouring in, “because clients knew that the work was up to standard and delivered on time”, as the anniversary book notes.
The closer we get to the turn of the century, the more Wits transforms from a traditional painting firm into an integrated property maintenance company. Since 2008, Wits Vastgoedonderhoud Nederland has consisted of eight independent family businesses that collaborate closely with one another in the areas of knowledge and innovation. From Friesland to Brabant, we are working on new calculation models, well-thought-out processes and smart concepts.
Today, Wits operates according to the tried-and-tested WITS formula: Value, Innovation, Future and Collaboration. “One size fits all” is impossible here, because the interests and priorities of a resident differ from those of a client – who in turn differs from a supply chain partner or employee. But whatever your relationship with Wits may be, one thing is and remains certain: you can count on our undivided attention. In this way, more than 125 years after Willem picked up his paintbrush, Wits is still leaving its mark on society.
