Support for children and young people with autism
The Papageno Foundation is an initiative of Jaap van Zweden and Aaltje van Zweden-van Buuren. They established this foundation to support the development of children and young people with autism. They began in 1996 by developing music therapy and conducting research into early diagnosis. In 2015, Her Majesty Queen Máxima opened the first Papageno House in Laren. In 2023, Papageno House Fryslân was opened by Princess Annette.
For young people with autism, finding their place in society is often no easy task. At Papageno House, we do everything we can to help young people with autism on their way to a future that is as independent as possible. Many young people with autism find this daunting and complicated. To lower the threshold and allow them to gradually get used to interacting with others, we work at Papageno House Fryslân in Lemmer based on one central principle: in everything we do, we try to bring the outside world inside. In doing so, we capitalise on their talents and offer plenty of opportunities for creative development. In addition, there are apartments where young people learn to live as independently as possible.
