In 2018, Leeuwarden was firmly in the spotlight as the European Capital of Culture. During that period, the idea arose to develop a centre for the creative industries as the next step in the development of the city and the region. To stimulate employment in the sector, to encourage ambitious young professionals to find and retain work in the region, and to help creative education programmes improve the quality of teaching through input from the business community.

MICA is a physical location in the heart of the city (in the building that houses Mediahuis Noord, among others), but above all a growing network of companies, experienced professionals, young talents and anyone who wants to become a professional in the creative industries. We bring them together.

MICA’s approach is based on experimentation. Every step in the ongoing process of trial and error is a lesson. Sometimes things don’t work out, sometimes you achieve surprising results. According to MICA, that is the way to innovate the profession. We believe that anyone with an open mind, a dose of courage and a desire to experiment can lead the way in the ever-evolving creative industry. We facilitate that.
